What a well made pre roll looks like

Open a pack and look at the joints side by side before you use one. They should be uniformly dense along their length, with no soft section near the filter and no obvious gap at the tip. Squeeze one gently: it should give slightly and spring back rather than crumple.

A pre roll that is loose at one end will burn down that side and run, wasting most of what is in it. One that is packed too tightly will not draw at all, and no amount of relighting fixes it. Consistency across a pack is the clearest single indicator of whether it was machine rolled to a standard or thrown together.

Lighting one correctly

Most people ruin the first third of a joint by lighting it badly.
